Operation Family Holiday: T‑Minus one sleep (and minus one person)

The night before a family holiday has its own electricity. A mix of excitement, mild chaos, and the kind of emotional static that only happens when 7 humans are about to share one villa, one pool, and approximately zero boundaries for a week.

And here we are. T‑minus one sleep. The countdown is real.

The Roll Call

We’ve got:

  • Mumma Helsie who will absolutely have her bag packed, zipped and sitting by the door like she’s waiting for a shuttle to NASA.
  • Jamei and Boston (my two daughters) who are equal parts excitement, kindness and fun.
  • Bek (my sister) co‑strategist in all things snacks, sunscreen, “special coffees” and sanity side chats.
  • Haylie (Bek’s girlfriend) who brings calm, logic and the ability to read keep smiling without sighing.
  • Harper (Haylie’s daughter) who will be the pint-sized addition to our clan and likely to entertain.
  • ME who is also known as Hannah’s Travel Services having spent hours researching, booking and planning to make this holiday a wonderfully memorable one.

Sadly, also one of our travellers is down and won’t be joining us – Jack (Jamei’s boyfriend) who was no longer able to fly so it’s now officially a GIRL’S TRIP!!!!

Packing Status: A study in human behaviour

Right now, someone is:

  • rolling clothes like a travel influencer
  • panic buying bikinis
  • pretending they’ve packed but actually just staring at an empty suitcase
  • teasing me that they don’t know where their passport is even though it hasn’t moved since 2019

Meanwhile, Mumma Helsie has:

  • packed
  • repacked
  • ironed something
  • and placed her travel documents in a labelled sleeve

Of course she has.

In the last 48 hours, our family group chat has gone from “gentle planning space” to “full‑blown command centre.” Notifications are firing like popcorn. One minute it’s passports, then it’s black T‑shirts, then someone’s lost their passport, then someone’s found it, then someone’s debating shampoo rations, and suddenly we’re all experts on sea‑sickness tablets and Thai power adapters. The frequency has increased so dramatically I’m half expecting Qantas to message me for updates. At this point, the chat isn’t a chat, it’s a living organism fuelled by excitement, panic, and picture proof of current packing statuses.

The Villa Dream

Tomorrow we step into our big Samui villa. The kind with an infinity pool that glows at night, bedrooms that feel like they were designed by someone who has never met children, and a kitchen we will absolutely not use except for fruit, toast and emergency chips.

There will be:

  • morning coffees with ocean air
  • thongs slapping on tiles
  • sunscreen that never fully rubs in
  • and that beautiful first day politeness before the real personalities emerge
Family holiday energy

This is the good stuff. The reason we do the group chats, the logistics, the airport shuffle, the “who’s sitting where” negotiations.

Because once we land:

  • the adults exhale
  • the jokes get sillier
  • and the memories start stacking themselves without us even trying

It’s the kind of trip where someone will cry in a good way, someone will burn despite SPF 50, and someone will say, “We should do this every year,” even though our introvert’s social battery depletion will take months to recover from.

The heart of it

Even with the complicated bits, the sibling dynamics, the personalities, the noise, the chaos, the love that sometimes comes out sideways, this is what it’s really about.

Time together. Time away. Time to remember that we’re a family who shows up. Even when we drive each other wild. Making memories is the goal.

T minus one sleep to family holiday magic. Let the villa adventures begin.
