Day 5 – Nothing but food (11 October)

After our big day on the boat yesterday we had nothing in particular planned but I will still up early and couldn’t sleep again, but this time I didn’t manage to leave Matthew undisturbed, as he rolled over and started to chat to me.

We realised the videos from underwater had come through from Rocky overnight, so we quickly grabbed the computer to watch them. We were mesmerised by what was captured as we once again debriefed, and smiled, about our day.
Matthew was wide awake now and decided to do some reading while I quickly popped out for coffee which I would enjoy back at the villa while I caught up on a couple of days worth of blogging.
We decided, once I was done to head for a walk along the beach. It was still early but boy oh boy was it hot panas kahli. We often like to comb the beach for artifacts back home which we add to the wall on our balcony, so we decided to do this again. While there was plenty to look at (toothpaste, straws, plastic wrappers, offerings to the gods) all washed up on the beach there was little we  could really call “keep-worthy”. Until we came across a sand mould of a house, which will go nicely with another one (a Christmas walrus) about the same size.
On our walk back, we were stopped by 3 young women who politely asked if we could take a photo of them together. Of course I obliged as I have now been taught well by my daughters on how to capture the perfect insta-pic. I maanged the iconic pic of the umbrellas and beanbags behind them, of which Bali is so well known for. We got to chatting and heard there was one from Chicago and 2 from Australia. I gave them some tips as it was the first day of their first trip here. We told them we were on our honeymoon, so they immediately asked if we’d like our picture taken, prompting us to steal a kiss for the picture.

I figured also it wouldn’t be a holiday without in Bali without an umbrella pic for Matthew too, it’s kind of a right of passage. Which I think we can all agree he looks super cute in.

We had decided to head out to Potato Head in Seminyak for lunch at Kuam. I had been here before and was impressed with the variety of different Indonesian dishes, from many different places in the country, so we jumped in a cab, and the traffic was insane. It wasn’t until we were a ways down the road before we realised there was a wedding ceremony which was impacting the traffic. The colours of the clothes people were wearing as they streamed out of the temple is always something spectacular to see.
Eventually we arrive at Potato Head, a hotel and beach club with social conscience. You walk through the grounds past their machines using recycled plastic waste to create jewelery and household items.

We arrive and the place is packed downstairs with all kinds of tourists from the around the world. It is often pretty easy to pick where each group has come from. We head upstairs and Kaum Restaurant is pretty quiet, but despite this we are asked if we have a reservation and the hostess looks around quite concerned when we say no. I am not sure why, but we are quickly shown to a table by the window and peruse the menu.
We opt for a few tasty smaller dishes to share, and as they begin to arrive we dive straight in. So quickly in fact I totally forgot to capture a picture of the beautifully presented food.
All I can tell you is what used to be on the plates below was some coconut chicken, prawn and fish dumplings, very firey beef slices and a gado gado vegetarian dish.

We decide to head back, as there is nowhere downstairs to sit that isn’t in full sun, and are ferried up to the main road to hail a taxi. The manoeuvres of the taxi driver are impressive as he chucks a u-ey in the middle of the busy street.
On the way home, we stop at Bintang Supermarket as we needed to pick up some supplies, but also I was intrigued to see what it looks like after it had burnt down a few years back and was rebuilt from the ground up. I love looking through supermarkets in other countries, and Matthew chuckles at me as I get excited about the smallest things, like bread with no crust, pastries that I have no idea what’s inside, and sliced fruit. I know what you’re thinking – what an idiot, however, I had a blast.
We walk back home after our exciting adventure at Bintang, and realise I am in desperate need of a pedicure, so Matthew hangs at the villa and I go and have what can only be described as the most painful I have experienced. I am a delicate flower with pain, so this was NOT the relaxing time it should have been.

The pedi of death

Our last night in Legian wouldn’t be complete without sunset drinks, as our next location is better for sunrises, so we had back down to B9B and grab a spot to enjoy. We laugh as the staff sing along to the local band tonight, as well as have a good chuckle at the somewhat less experienced musicians attempt a whole variety of songs including ‘Give me a home among the gumtrees’. I wanted to request a Foo Fighters song, but sadly they didn’t know any and were not prepared to attempt it either.
The couple sitting next to us were intriguing. An older Balinese guy and a 20 something middle eastern man who were enjoying the music. The Balinese man asked me if I like Latino music, and would I go and request a song on his behalf.  I encouraged him to head up himself which he did, and he smiled the whole way through the song. We later learned he was a musician himself, a violinist, who was in a band which plays in Canguu. Fascinating human.

The sunset was not Bali’s best, but we still enjoyed our time with a drink and a snack (seriously I am going to roll home), and as the sun hit the horizon it changed to a rich red colour, of which was not done justice by the picture I took.

We head for our last walk back, and order some food to be delivered. We were visited for the last time by Sly. Sly is the bat that likes to do laps of our stairwell, which we discovered on the first night and scared the shit out of us, but we have grown to love him (as well as make sure our bedroom door upstairs is closed at all times).
We fall into bed, and start to plan our morning out as we move locations to Sanur for a fresh and new experience.
