Day 5 – Music to my ears

The day began early again as my body was wide awake at 3am. So we get up and have a snack before eventually deciding we should get some more sleep as we have theatre tickets tonight and know it will be a long day. When we eventually do arise properly, Matthew does a coffee run while I attempt to surface. I can be like a slow moving ship when I am tired.

The coffee does help kick start my morning and Matthew and I both sit in front of our screens, him to work and me to blog. I also check out the traffic that has been coming through and where people are reading it from. Seems that there is someone who has been reading a whole lot of my blogs from the BBC UK server. I wonder who that is? Hello to you if you’re reading this. I find it fascinating to see the insights and stats on hits and which pages are being visited. I obviously have a number of friends from around the world so its nice to think people are interested enough in what we are up to, and follow along.
As my blog doesn’t take as long, I just relax by the tv while Matthew works through till lunchtime and we head for a bite to eat. We walk through the diamond district. Basically an entire street of diamond jewellery lines both sides of the road. It’s hard not to stop and admire the sparkle they emanate from the windows. I amazed at some of the designs, and while there were many beautiful rings and stones, too many far too pretentious for my liking. I certainly wasn’t in the market for a diamond ring anyway. But to be able to admire some of the simple elegance was breath taking. We continued to walk though and wondered what value would be held in the street alone.

We make our way to the Argyle for a quick drink before we head to lunch. It’s the perfect people watching spot as a variety of people go by. The area is so very different from where we were at the business district. There are many young people, more casually dressed. There is a college nearby and the street has many quick eats too, which is further evidence that supports the younger generations in their lunch breaks.

There are many people with dogs, umbrellas and winter woolies. As I look down the lane way there are street markets going on as well. There’s a beautiful bbq smell wafting in the air and making me very hungry. So we decide to head to The Bleeding Heart which has 3 different dining options contained within it’s own little precinct.
As we sit down we decide to share meals again and order a rib eye steak with some home made chips, along with some salt and pepper squid. We are surrounded by a number of different groups and generations of people. A couple of older gentlemen both dining on their own, a group of young professionals that were having a working lunch, and groups of lads having boozy lunches.

We head back to the apartment so Matthew can finish the rest of his work day, while I simply put my feet up and relax and catch up on what’s happening back home. I get to video chat with my girls, who actually had only made contact with me cause they needed help fixing the coffee machine in the kitchen back home. While I am a great trouble shooter, to do that remotely is somewhat of a challenge, so I give her the best advice that I can…..google it. We chat a little bit and as always, Boston entertained us it’s her silly antics as Jamei was cooking dinner in the background. It’s always nice to know that I can leave then to their own thing while I travel. This is the benefit of having kids young, as they are now 21 and nearly 18, and being a 41 year old and having the freedom to have part time dependants has afforded me wonderful opportunities to see the world.
Matthew finally finishes his work day and we settle in to watch a movie before we need to head out to the theatre. I was keen to get in a musical mood, so we decide to watch Rock of Ages. What an incredibly cool movie indeed. Surprising to see the cast included people like Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin. All playing very different characters that I am used to seeing them play. Except for Russell Brand, he just seemed to be playing himself.
Before the movie is done, we decide to order some takeaway before we head out the theatre. Thai is the cuisine of choice tonight, and it is delicious, as I sit on the couch and sing a long to the incredible soundtrack of the movie.

We rug up and grab an uber down to Lynne Gillian Theatre in Drury Lane. Not a muffin man in sight though. There is a big line up to get inside and we thought we’d grab a drink nearby while we wait for it to start. Because the production of School of Rock is quite family orientated, there are many kids about too.
We head over to the Prince of Wales and order a drink. The place is packed, so we finish our drinks and head to the theatre. What we didn’t realise is that it actually started at 7.30pm and we had thought it was at 8pm. We are only 10 mins late, but have to wait at the back of the theatre for an opportune time to be shown to our seats. Fortunately we have aisle seats, and we’re shown to the third row, and I can’t help but smile the whole way through. Our seats are amazing and the performance simply brilliant. The cast is packed with incredibly talented performers, both young and old. I was impressed with the depth of skill in dance, song and their chosen instrument too. The young people in particular were mesmerising to watch as they confidently take the stage.

The finale performance was a crowd pleaser, with everyone up on their feet dancing along, cheering and clapping in unison. The young man playing the guitarist wails and has us all hollering.

I just can’t wipe the smile off my face. So grateful for yet another wonderful musical theatre experience. One of my favourite things to do, since I was a kid, has been to go to the theatre. Having had fallen in love with it as a kid watching HMAS Pinafore in Sydney.
We grab a cab, and head home and decide to pop into the bar downstairs under our apartment block. It’s very quiet and we sidle up to the bar where we are the only ones in there. Which didn’t last long as a group of 3 men stumbled in, clearly having been to many many other establishments before here, they regailed us with the same stories and questions about 5 times over before we decided to head home. They were like many men I’d encountered in bars back home, where they are too familiar too quick, and given the amount they’d had to drink, could fly off the handle at any moment.
We don’t go to bed straight away, as we get to chatting, which means that it wasn’t till 3am we eventually head to bed. Time always disappears when we start to chat. It’s quite insane really how quickly time flies when you’re having fun.
