Day 12 – Igloos and song requests

It’s been so nice to not have to rush about in the mornings. We are taking these rare opportunities to relax and just natter about the days events and the people we’ve interacted with. We do often comment about how nice it is to be on the same time zone. Matthew and I do try to squeeze in as much time as possible chatting on the phone, but its simple pleasures like being able to have a quiet hug on the couch in front of a movie.

After getting most of my blogging done, we get ourselves together to make our way to where we had booked for lunch. It is called the Coppa Club, and essentially you dine outside in a clear igloo. The pictures on their website looked incredible, so it was awesome to see that it was a beautiful in real life too.
Set right by the Thames and Tower Bridge, it was the perfect backdrop for a lovely lunch together. Our waiter was such a gorgeous human. Rather than asking us what we wanted to order he said ‘what will make you happy today?’. We order some wine and settle on some shared food.

There are people who come and go over our dining time, as when there is just the two of you, the igloo is shared. The music plays softly in the back ground, and the waiter continues to entertain us by singing along at times.
We make our way out and farewell our waiter, and we meander back into the city. We stop and admire the architecture and monuments throughout the city. It really is incredible at the age of some of these buildings.

The trip home was easy on the tube. We head out of the station and pass a man on the street, not asking for money, but food, so we quickly headed not far to buy him something warm to eat. He smiles back at us as we carry on with our day. I continue to be amazed at the impact last night’s movie has had on me. Seeing the world through very different eyes indeed.
We decided we’d grab a game of pool before we work out what to do with the rest of our day. Matthew is actually pretty good at pool, so its no surprise he beat me 3-0. We really enjoy the banter at the table. Although it’s a very quiet pub, there is a bit of party planning going around us, which is hilarious to listen to. It was clearly the manager and a young couple organising a post christening event for their baby. Being someone who loves to plan events, I couldn’t believe the time it took for them to get to the end of their conversation. I would have had it sorted in no time at all.

We head back toward the apartment, and end up in an accidental pub crawl of sorts. We head back to the Eagle, which was highly entertaining with all the staff coming and going. Tonight the clientele is much busier, and we only stop for one drink as we wanted to head back to try the Welsh Rarebit at the pub around the corner. We head in and the place is buzzing, so much so that we have squeezed ourselves at the end of the bar. We get to chat with the staff, and we are introduced to Xavi who is an Aussie who’s lived in London for a while now. He is such an interesting young man who loves meeting strangers, and we share a number of stories. As some space becomes available we move to the other end of the bar where there are a couple of spare seats. It’s very interesting here, as it’s not uncommon to just stand at the bar, even if there are seats available.
We sit down and settle in and watching the comings and goings of people sidling up to order rounds for their crew.
I catch the attention of a guy that looks very happy to be ordering his drink. He’s an older guy, greyhound hair, friendly smile, so I say g’day. I can’t believe have extraordinarily Australian I have become amongst the Brits. Definitely proud to be an Aussie indeed.
We start chatting to find out his name is Henning, a Norwegian insurance sales man out with colleagues who are all visiting as a result of the owners shouting them all a trip to London for a few days. He is a happy family man with one grandchild that he couldn’t wait to show me a picture of. Given the industry that they all work in, Matthew and them certainly can talk the talk together. Henning hangs around with us for quite some time and we exchange details, hoping one day we will find ourselves in Norway and he can show us all the local spots.

Being on a bit of buzz after meeting wonderful strangers, we decide to hit Piano Works again. Knowing the music will be great and the atmosphere will be just what we are feeling like, we head over there, which all are in only a minute’s walk from each other. We are greeted warmly by the bouncers, who recognised us from my first night there and waved us through straight away. It’s always interesting to me, the world over, how small acts of friendliness and kindness, impact on others, and how the reciprocate.
The rest of the night was spent dancing, singing and of course requesting songs for the band. We’d put in a couple of requests tonight, in particular a song that we both love ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’. We collect a new friend in Ian, who is on his own, so we invite him to join us. We all sing, drink and dance together till we realise it’s probably time to go home.
Another incredible day, with incredible people. Sleeping with a smile on my face to be with someone who loves strangers just as I do.
